Xtradecal sheet X72-164 covers F-102As from 4 USAFE units. The sheet covers the following airframes and units:-

  • F-102A 56-1237 from the 526th FIS, USAFE based at Ramstein AB c.1960-61. This aircraft had a red and white striped fin, red airbrake housing and carried 'buzz number' FC-237;
  • F-102A 54-1405 from the 496th FIS, USAFE based at Hahn AFB during the early 1960s. This carried a black and yellow striped fin, black airbrake housing and carries 'buzz number' FC-405;
  • F-102A 56-1032 from the 32nd FIS, USAF based at Soesterburg AB during August 1965. This aircraft had a green fin band outlined in white and a red/white/blue striped airbrake housing together with 'buzz number' FC-032 and a red/white/blue diagonal fuselage stripe;
  • F-102A 56-1086 from the 525th FIS, USAFE based at Bitburg AB during August 1965. This carried a blue fin stripe outlined in white and 'buzz number' FC-086.

All aircraft were painted in the standard Air Defence Command scheme of FS16473 ADC Grey.

The instructions comprise a double-sided sheet of A4 color photocopy with left and right hand side views of each aircraft and a single set of and lower views.

Note that airframes up to 56-1317 had the Case X wing, with 'upturned' wingtips, whilst those from 56-1318 onwards had the Case XX wing with 'downturned' wingtips. All of the aircraft on this sheet have the earlier Case X wing and the Meng kit can therefore be used.

The sheet is beautifully printed in good register and contains stencil data for a single aircraft. However there is a problem - whilst the individual aircraft and unit markings appear correct, the blue used for the 'USAF', 'U.S.Air Force' and 'stars and bars' is incorrect. Insignia Blue (FS15044) is a very dark, almost black shade, whilst the blue used by Xtradecal is the same as the fin flashes for the Bitburg aircraft and is far too light. These markings will therefore need to be replaced.

With the exception of the Insignia Blue problem, this is a very nice sheet, and provides the modeller with a choice of very colourful schemes.
