Starfighter Decals have been around for some time, but have not produced much of interest to USAF modelers. Their latest sheet, 72-149, bucks the trend by providing markings for 3 F-102s in ANG service.
Three units are featured on the sheet:-
- F-102A 57-813 from the 146th FIS, 112th FIG, Pennsylvania ANG. Overall Air Defence Command Grey (FS16473) with a black nose, upper cockpit, spine, fin and wingtips. The rudder carried black/pale yellow stripes and the wing fences were pale yellow. The wing drop tanks were also black with pale yellow markings. “PENNSYLVANIA” was carried in pale yellow above the rudder;
- F-102A 56-1241 from the 102nd FIS, New York ANG. This carried the South East Asian scheme of FS34079, FS34102 and FS30219 upper surfaces with FS36622 lower surfaces and a black radome. The New York ANG carried colourful markings, comprising a large blue white fin flash containing a large embem and “NEW YORK” in blue;
- F-102A 55-3428 from the 118th FIS, Connecticut ANG. This was overall ADC Grey with black/white trim on the run and rudder in the shape of a stylised eagle, with “CONNECTICUT” in black above the rudder.
The sheet comprises all the individual unit markings and enough USAF/U.S.AIR FORCE markings for two aircraft. It is well printed in perfect register. Instructions are on a double sided color A5 sheet and provide a left side view of each aircraft, additional right, upper and lower surface diagrams to show camouflage scheme demarcation and color callouts.
Whilst this is a nice sheet, it does seem somewhat of a waste as all three schemes are available on pre-existing sheets by Draw Decal and Wolfpak Decals.
